Letting – and Getting – Kids Outside
A view of the Kids’ Park at Mary’s A-Maze-ing Pumpkins
Why do kids like to be outside? Are they naturally attracted to its many possibilities, natural elements (like rocks, leaves, and water), and beautiful animals?
When we let – and get – kids outside, they’re empowered to be themselves or whomever their imaginations conjure. They devise their own games and activities; develop narratives about nature; and discover the creatures around them.
In the great outdoors, their “inside voices” and regulated movements become less relevant. Kids can be loud and move freely. They often incorporate found objects into their play — just think of all the things an amazing stick can become! And since they interact with less structure outdoors, they can test new skills with real or imaginary friends. Children may also expand their critical thinking skills as they navigate the environment.
Scientific studies have found that children who regularly play outside show:
- Better use of all five senses
- Expanded learning
- Greater independence
- Greater muscle strength
- Improved brain development
- Improved communication skills
- Improved motor skills
- Improved overall health
- Improved peer-to-peer relationships
- Increased appreciation for the environment
- Increased openness with parents and caregivers
- Increased self-awareness
- Lower body mass index
At the farm, we love to host kids’ events. Mary’s Land 160-acre setting provides a large expanse of safe terrain (some areas are reserved for the animals and machinery) and endless treasures to discover.
This fall’s Mary’s A-Maze-ing Pumpkins event (which runs until October 31st) also offers a specially designed Kids’ Park including:
- Children’s corn maze
- Connect Four (large sized)
- Corn hole
- Easy navigation
- Hay bale set ups
- Playset
- Stroller accessibility
- Tires to climb
We invite you and your family to the farm to hear the animals, touch the hay bales, see a rainbow of colors, and taste the sweet, fresh air.
